Dogging in Bedfordshire

From Dunstable Downs and Sharpenhoe Clappers to the woods and lay-bys around Bedford, the county's best-known dogging spots, with a map for each.

Bedfordshire takes in Bedford, Luton and Dunstable, but most of the county is countryside: small towns, villages and a band of woodland across the middle. That makes it a great county for dogging, with hidden car parks, lay-bys and woods from the Chiltern downs in the south to the quiet lanes north of Bedford.

Each spot below comes with a map, and where you walk in from the road there is a what3words address too. A lot of these places have walkers and families about during the day, so the notes say when to go. Spots come and go, so use each one as somewhere to start.

Bedford and the north of the county

Around Bedford there is a big country park by the river and some tucked-away business car parks, and north of the town quiet lanes, woods and lay-bys run out towards Turvey, Harrold and Riseley.

Priory Country Park, Bedford

A large public car park with paths into the woods, and couples and groups about every day once it gets dark. The main gates close in the evening, but turn off Barkers Lane and take the first left before the gate: a long track with parking along it runs down towards the river.

Priory Business Park, off Fraser Road

Over the first roundabout and left at the end of the road, there is a secluded car park hidden from the main road. It only comes alive in the evenings and at weekends, once the offices have shut.

Cardington Mill car park, Priory Country Park

A few hundred yards along from the business park, at the end of Stannard Way, this small car park is tucked away in the trees beside the river, far more secluded than the office car parks. A footbridge leads straight over into the woods and riverside paths of Priory Country Park.

Cardington Road car park, Bedford

The car park off Cardington Road on the A603. There is sometimes something going on in the car park late at night, but most people park up and head into the wooded area beside it.

View on Google Maps

Browns Wood, Twinwood Road

Park in the lay-by off Twinwood Road, by the dual carriageway outside Clapham. Other cars parked up after dark are a good sign: meet in the lay-by, or follow the paths into the woods, where there is plenty of cover.

Loop road off Box End Road

A short stretch of road that leaves Box End Road and joins it again, well covered by trees, with plenty going on in the evenings.

View on Google Maps

A428 lay-by between Turvey and Bromham

About two miles out of Turvey towards Bedford, on the left: a big lay-by with recycling bins, so it is easy to find in the dark. Lorry drivers often park up here, and there is a wood behind it. Friday nights are good.

View on Google Maps

Daisy Bank picnic site, Felmersham

A small picnic site on Carlton Road, the quiet back road between Felmersham and Carlton. The entrance has been blocked off with concrete blocks, so it doesn't get as much use as it used to, but it is still worth a look if you are in the area.

View on Google Maps

Dungee Road, Harrold

A secluded road through the woods with plenty of places to pull in and get out, and a parking area that sees a fair bit of action. The road goes very quiet after 9pm, and that is when things get going, mostly at weekends.

Fields and woods by All Saints, Riseley

Go to the end of Church Lane, then into the fields and the woods to the left of the church. Mostly couples who like to be watched, in the evenings.

Ampthill, Woburn and the Greensand Ridge

Through the middle of the county the Greensand Ridge gives a run of woods and forest car parks, from Marston Vale over to Woburn, plus a long lay-by on the A6.

Clophill lay-by, A6

A long, well-used lay-by on the A6 north of Clophill, heading towards Bedford. Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm until about 1am are the best, but there is usually something going on during the week too.

Maulden Wood car park

Maulden Wood has a pay car park, but just outside it there is a large, well-hidden parking area, and that is the one that gets busy, every day from about 6pm.

View on Google Maps

Houghton House, Ampthill

A small parking area at the end of a narrow single-track lane off the Ampthill to Bedford road. Not much happens in the day, but it gets very busy in the evenings, and some head down to the ruins of Houghton House, where there is more room.

Head out of Heath and Reach towards Milton Keynes, past the last pub, and up the lane to the country park car park, with woods all round it. Very quiet at night.

Sandy, Biggleswade and the east

In the east of the county there are heath and woodland spots on the hills around Sandy, and quiet lanes out towards Biggleswade, Old Warden and Shefford.

The Sandy Hills

You can only get so far in a car, so be ready to walk a little, but after 9pm it is mostly doggers up here, and it is good all year round.

Deepdale, by the Sandy Heath mast

Out of Sandy on the B1042 towards Potton, turn up the narrow road past Deepdale and into the woods by the TV mast. There is usually something happening at most times of the day, but evenings and weekends after 8pm are best.

Luton and Dunstable

In the south of the county the Chilterns give Dunstable Downs and Sharpenhoe Clappers, and Luton itself has several parks and industrial estates that come alive late at night.

Sharpenhoe Clappers car park

A small rural car park outside Streatley: turn off the A6 for Streatley, turn right opposite the Chequers, right again at the T-junction, and it is about half a mile past the houses. Despite being so rural it sees plenty of action, even in the day.

View on Google Maps

Sharpenhoe Clappers woods

Park up in the lay-by on Barton Road, then it is a bit of a trek up into the woods of Sharpenhoe Clappers, but worth it: there is someone about at almost any hour.

Busy after 9pm in the evenings and at weekends, in the car park itself or the wooded area nearest it, on the hill to the left of the park.

View on Google Maps

Before you go

Most of these places have walkers and dog walkers about in daylight, so go later. Arrive quietly, be respectful of everyone else, and leave nothing behind.
