Dogging in Devon

From Mamhead and Ashclyst Forest to Jennycliff, Haytor and the A39 near Bideford, the best-known dogging spots in Devon, with a map for each.

Devon is cream teas and coast paths on the postcards, but after dark the moors and clifftops have a very different kind of visitor. The Plymouth Herald has run lists of the city's favourite spots more than once, and in February 2021 police on Dartmoor near Yelverton caught a couple in their car at 2am, on what was reported as the coldest night in 26 years, which is what we call commitment.

Below you'll find four areas, from Exeter and Torquay to Plymouth, Dartmoor and North Devon, with a map for every spot, and a mention wherever gay and bi men are the main crowd. Almost all of these places are busy with walkers and tourists by day, so the evening is your friend. Spots can close, get busier or go quiet as the seasons and years go by, so think of this as your starting point.

Exeter and East Devon

Forestry car parks on the hills around Exeter, heathland above Sidmouth and a lorry park on the A30 at Honiton.

Mamhead forest parking area

Head up Telegraph Hill from Exeter past the Haldon café, carry on for about a mile, then turn left for Mamhead and Kenton. There's forest parking along the road a few hundred yards in, with woods on both sides. A member's report from December 2025 says it's been great over the years and that you'll find plenty going on in the woods. It's also popular with families and running groups, and DevonLive has reported local runners complaining about men approaching them and about used condoms on the grass, so stick to later in the evening and take your rubbish home.

Ashclyst Forest, Forest Gate car park

The main car park at Ashclyst Forest, out to the east of Exeter. A member's report says it's good after dark on Saturday evenings, with plenty of quiet spots in the trees.

Max's Cabin 2 lorry park, A30 Honiton

Coming from Exeter, take the Honiton exit, go round the bend and turn left into the lorry park, then into the car park on the left, with dense woods all around it. A member's report from April 2026 says it's a spot for gay men, best on weekdays after about 6pm and at weekends any time after lunch, especially in warm weather, and you'll still hear it called by its old name, Smiley's.

East Hill Strips

The car park along the East Hill Strips above Ottery St Mary. A member's report says to drive to the far end, with afternoons the best time and plenty of quiet areas for some fun.

Mutter's Moor car park, Peak Hill, Sidmouth

The large car park on Peak Hill Road on the heathland above Sidmouth, as mentioned in a member's report.

Torbay and South Devon

Clifftop and beach car parks around Torquay and a country park near Newton Abbot.

Watcombe Beach car park, Torquay

Off the Torquay to Teignmouth road, down to the car park at the end on the left. Torbay Council once tried to shut it for good after reports of anti-social behaviour, DevonLive called it a dogging hotspot, and the local MP called the closure an over-reaction, so it was put on hold. It's popular with hikers, runners and dog walkers by day.

Walls Hill, Babbacombe

Easy to find once you're in Babbacombe. A member's report describes people in cars in the car park, or a walk to the end of Walls Hill, where there are bushes and a couple of shelters. Warm summer evenings are the time.

Stover woods, near Newton Abbot

The car park at the top, just past the riding school as you head up the hill. A member's report calls it nice and dark and out of the way, with some benches too. It's now pay and display with ANPR cameras, so check the charges and times before you stay.

Plymouth and Dartmoor

Waterfront car parks in the city, and big dark moorland car parks a short drive north.

Jennycliff car park, Plymouth

The large car park by the café at Jennycliff, with those views across Plymouth Sound. A family favourite by day, but a member's report says it gets going from 11pm, and the Plymouth Herald still had it on its list in 2020.

Devil's Point car park, Plymouth

The car park at Devil's Point, on the waterfront at Stonehouse. A member's report says there are usually a few cars around with interested parties, and it's also made the Plymouth Herald's lists. You only get three hours of free parking, so keep an eye on the time.

Clearbrook car park, Dartmoor

Take the main road from Plymouth towards Yelverton, turn right for Clearbrook about a mile past the café, then look for the narrow road on the right leading to a car park just before a cattle grid. A member's report says summer weekends are the time, and the Plymouth Herald reported a website recommending Sundays from 8pm to 10pm.

Cadover Bridge, Dartmoor

The large car park by the River Plym between Yelverton and Lee Moor. It's very busy with tourists during the day, so this one is strictly for after dark: a member's report calls it very dark and great for some fun.

View on Google Maps

Haytor, Dartmoor

The car park by the information centre below Haytor, with a smaller car park further up the road if you want more privacy (skip the furthest one, as it charges). It's packed with families in summer, but a member's report sums up the night shift: always action after dark, "and boy it's dark".

North Devon

Tree-covered lay-bys on the A39 and a community wood near South Molton.

A39 lay-bys, near the Torridge Bridge

On the A39 between Barnstaple and the Bideford roundabout, close to the bridge over the Torridge, there are lay-bys on both sides of the road, raised up with lots of tree cover and a small wood you can get into. A member's report from 2024 says they're very popular day and night, for both dogging and cruising.

South Molton Community Woods

The car park on Hacche Lane. It's full of dog walkers while it's still light, so wait until dark: a member's report says Friday and Saturday nights are best.

Before you go

Moorland roads are dark and the weather turns quickly, so take a torch and a warm layer, pull in quietly and leave no rubbish behind.
