Dogging in Gloucestershire

From Barrow Wake and Coopers Hill to Dover's Hill, Coaley Peak and the Forest of Dean, the best-known dogging spots in Gloucestershire, with a map for each.

Gloucestershire is all honey-coloured Cotswold villages and cheese rolling on the postcards, but up on the escarpment the viewpoints have been busy after dark for years. While the rest of the country was stuck indoors during the 2020 lockdown, residents near Barrow Wake told BBC Radio Gloucestershire that things at the viewpoint had actually got busier, with people turning up at lunchtime and after work.

The county splits into four areas below, from Gloucester and Cheltenham to Stroud and the Forest of Dean, and every spot has its own map. Spots on the Bristol side of South Gloucestershire, like Tog Hill, are on our Bristol page. We have mentioned the spots mostly frequented by gay and bi men. Plenty of these hills and woods are busy with ramblers and families by day, so each entry says when the evening crowd tends to arrive. Things move on over the years, so use this as a starting point rather than a timetable.

Gloucester and the Vale

Hillside nature reserves above the city, woods on the edge of the Cotswold escarpment, and a quiet corner behind the shops.

Coopers Hill car park, A46

The Coopers Hill Nature Reserve car park, halfway up the Painswick road from Gloucester, below the hill better known for its cheese rolling. Members' reports going back to 2011 describe men wandering the woods behind the car park, mostly gay and bi, and a member's report from June 2025 says the action in the woods is still going. Early Sunday evenings and late nights are best.

Behind B&Q, St Oswalds

At St Oswalds retail park, behind Tesco and B&Q. A member's report from 2020 says it's mainly couples, in the early evening.

Cheltenham and the Cotswold edge

Viewpoints and quarries along the top of the escarpment, a park in the middle of Cheltenham, and quiet car parks out towards Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh and the Water Park.

Barrow Wake viewpoint, Birdlip

The county's most famous dogging spot, at the viewpoint off the A417 near Birdlip, with views on a clear day across to the Malverns and the Welsh mountains. Back in 2010 a prankster put up a proper brown tourist sign pointing to an “official dogging area”, and while angry residents had it down in no time, the BBC reported it was already one of their most-read stories, which tells you everything about its fame.

Gloucestershire Live has been calling it notorious for years, and police patrols, complaints from councillors and calls to shut it at night have all come and gone since, and Barrow Wake carries on regardless. Members' reports going back to 2006 talk about action in the woods at the bottom end of the car park, gay and straight alike. The car park itself is still closed for the A417 roadworks, but that hasn't slowed things down one bit: park up on the road nearby and walk in.

Cleeve Hill quarry car park

Up the A46 to Cleeve Hill, turn towards the golf course, go past the club entrances and through the gate, then sharp left into the big quarry car park. A member's report from 2016 says couples and gay men who like to be watched come here after dark, and back then the old-school signal still applied: interior lights flashing on and off.

Kilkenny viewpoint, near Andoversford

The viewpoint and picnic area on the A436, along the road from the Kilkenny Inn near Andoversford, quiet and just off the main road. Reported by a member in 2022, and Kilkenny got another mention in 2024.

Sandford Park, Cheltenham

The park by the River Chelt, close to the town centre. A member's report from 2018 describes summer nights with lots of couples, TVs after midnight and plenty going on in the bushes. It's a busy family park by day, so only visit in the evenings.

Dover's Hill, Chipping Campden

The National Trust car park at Dover's Hill, a quiet viewpoint just outside Chipping Campden, covered by trees. Four members' reports between 2015 and 2019 describe couples, single men, CDs and gay men, with dusk and dark the best times and Saturday and Sunday nights the busiest. The old-school signal still applies: pull up, wait and flash your lights. You can also roll a window down or open the door to show you're happy for people to come and watch or join in.

Fosse Way pull-in, north of Moreton-in-Marsh

Head out of Moreton-in-Marsh towards Stratford on the Fosse Way. About a mile out, past the lay-by with the food wagon, take the little turning on the right, and there's a pull-in about 100 yards along on the right. Members' reports from 2011 say early evening is best, from the 4pm commute to around 8pm, mostly bi and trans with some couples, and back then the old-school signal still applied: turn your interior light on and wait.

Cotswold Water Park, South Cerney

The car parks around the lakes at South Cerney, between Cirencester and Swindon. A member's report from 2015 points to a small signposted picnic area on Spine Road, just before the paintball sign, with a gravel car park and a copse behind it, good at any time of day or night. It gets waterlogged after rain.

Riverside Park, Lechlade

The riverside car park by the Thames at Lechlade, with a short walk down to the water. A member's report from 2010 tells of two women and a guy having some real good times by the river.

Stroud and the south Cotswolds

Commons and viewpoints along the escarpment above Stroud and Dursley, and National Trust woods.

Coaley Peak picnic site

The picnic site and viewpoint on the B4066 between Stroud and Dursley, with views across the Severn Vale by day and a long-standing reputation after dark.

A couple of minutes from Coaley Peak, signposted off the road: an open car park, open 24 hours, with plenty of woodland to wander into. Straight, bi and gay.

The Forest of Dean

Forest car parks, a hilltop above Mitcheldean and the harbour at Lydney. As one member put it back in 2006, there are plenty of secluded off-road car parks in the forest.

Speech House road car park, Cinderford

A large car park on the right as you leave Cinderford on the Speech House road, about 300 yards before the Speech House hotel. Reported by a member in April 2025, so one of the most up-to-date spots in the county.

Plump Hill, near Mitcheldean

At the top of Plump Hill, by the Wilderness Centre, a gravel road leads to several very private lay-bys on both sides. Positive reports from members since 2016.

View on Google Maps

Woolaston picnic site, A48

The picnic area car park off the A48 at Woolaston. A member's report from 2013 says it was on police alert after someone mistook an unmarked police car's opening and closing doors for an invitation, so make sure you know who you're signalling to.

View on Google Maps

Lydney Harbour

Off the A48 at Lydney, follow the signs to the harbour, with plenty of places to stop around the harbour and the canal. A member's report from 2013 says more women and couples are needed, so this one's waiting for you.

Before you go

Leave the daylight to the ramblers, the dog walkers and the picnickers. Arrive quietly, only join in where you're welcome, and leave nothing behind but tyre tracks.
