Dogging in Hertfordshire

From No Man's Land Common and Bunkers Park to Wymondley Woods, Stanborough and Broxbourne Woods, the best-known dogging spots in Hertfordshire, with a map for each.

Hertfordshire is commuter belt on the postcards, all garden cities and golf courses, but it has more quiet country car parks than you might expect, and they've been keeping people busy for years. The Hertfordshire Mercury published a whole list of the county's hotspots, and in 2022 Hertfordshire police confirmed that spots around Rickmansworth had been reported to them, while pointing out that dogging isn't banned by any one law.

The county splits into four areas below, from St Albans and Hemel Hempstead to Watford, Stevenage and Hertford, each spot with its own map. Where a place is mostly used by gay and bi men, the entry tells you. Many of these are family parks and dog-walking routes by day, so evenings are usually your best bet. Sites change, with some closing and others getting busier or quieter, so use this guide as a place to begin.

St Albans, Harpenden and Hatfield

A common between St Albans and Wheathampstead, lanes and lay-bys on the road to Luton, and the car parks around Welwyn and Hatfield.

No Man's Land Common, Ferrers Lane

The car park on Ferrers Lane, on the left as you come off the B651, on the common between St Albans and Wheathampstead. It's been a fixture for years, with gay action too. Members' reports say the car park gets used until 2am, and one describes an excellent night with a couple and a few guys. The Hertfordshire Mercury included it when it rounded up the county's spots.

Marford Road lay-by, by Brocket Hall

A loop lay-by off the B653 Marford Road, on the same side as the Brocket Hall golf course, between Wheathampstead and Lemsford. A member's report says it's always busy and very discreet, set back off the road with a wooded area to play in.

Punch Bowl Lane, near St Albans

A quiet single-track lane with passing places, out towards Redbourn. A member's report mentions couples, bi and gay visitors, and the Hertfordshire Mercury had it on its list too. The lane is very narrow, so the passing places are the only places to pull in: be ready to move on if someone needs to get past.

Ayot Greenway car park, Ayot Green

Come off the B197, go over the A1(M) into Ayot Green, follow the road to the right for about half a mile, then take the turning on the right and follow the track to the end. A member's report calls it great and very quiet, from a couple who'd been using it for years.

Stanborough Park, Welwyn Garden City

Just off the A1(M) at the Welwyn exit. It's a busy family park by day, so save this one for later: a member's report says the car park on the left gets very busy on weeknights after 10.30pm, and another rates it the best place around Welwyn Garden City.

The Galleria, Hatfield

The second car park behind the tunnel sub-station at the Galleria, very empty after midnight. A member's report says it's mainly men, with the occasional woman, and handy for car meet-ups.

Digswell car park

On the B1000 just before the viaduct as you head towards Welwyn village. A member's report says it gets busy after dark.

Hemel Hempstead, Watford and Rickmansworth

Woods and country car parks on the western edge of the county, from Bunkers Park down to the London border.

Bunkers Park, Hemel Hempstead

Between Leverstock Green and Bedmond, along a restricted access road (vehicles under 2.5 metres only) to a good-sized car park at the end of a wide rough track, with plenty of secluded spots in the vegetation. A member's report says Thursday to Saturday are the best nights, with couples and singles, and some dog walkers about.

Bishop's Wood, White Hill, Rickmansworth

The car park on White Hill, between Rickmansworth and Harefield, surrounded by woods with a picnic area. A member's report says there's no barrier, so it's open around the clock. White Hill was one of the Rickmansworth spots reported to Hertfordshire police as a hotspot in 2022, so don't be surprised to see a patrol.

Oxhey Woods, Warren Lane

The small car park off Warren Lane, by the woods. One member's report tells of watching a couple in action at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon, so it isn't only a night-time spot.

River Colne woods, Colonial Way, Watford

Park in the car park by the roundabout off Colonial Way, walk up the ramp and turn right into the woods. The car park is right next to a children's playground, so keep moving and head well into the woods by the river. A member's report says the back path is usually quiet, with the odd dog walker.

Business park lane, Elstree

A lane by a business park and industrial estate in Elstree, one for the evenings once everyone has gone home. A member's report says it can be good after dark, with couples, singles and the odd TV.

Stevenage, Hitchin and North Hertfordshire

Woods near Willian, a big park in Stevenage and quiet country parks out towards the Bedfordshire border.

Wymondley Woods, near Willian

A nice quiet spot by open fields at the back of Willian. Go past the Fox, bear right at the fork towards Great Wymondley, then take the turning on the right, follow the road down the side of the fields to the end and bear left. A member's report from 2022 is the most recent, and another mentions a few car parks that get busy some nights.

Fairlands Valley Park, Stevenage

The car park off Six Hills Way near the lake, signposted Fairlands Park. It's a family park by day, so go later on. One member's report was very impressed, comparing it favourably with a swingers club, and another mentions girls meeting girls and guys meeting guys.

View on Google Maps

Radwell Meadows Country Park

Off the Norton to Stotfold road by Norton Bury Lane, and known in the reports as the Nortonbury picnic area. A member's report says there's no barrier at night now, and you even get people and couples at weekday lunchtimes.

View on Google Maps

Weston Hills, Baldock

The car park on the left going up the hill out of Baldock towards Weston. A member's report mentions couples at night and gay fun in the woods by day. Plain-clothes officers have patrolled here after complaints, so it's one to treat with care.

View on Google Maps

Hertford, Ware and the Lea Valley

Forest car parks near Brickendon, a common by the A10 and the green spaces around Hertford and Sawbridgeworth.

Broxbourne Woods, west car park

From Brickendon, go along Brickendon Green for about half a mile to the west car park. A member's report says to go left along the path, through a small gap in the fence and over to a screen made of branches. Mostly men, lunchtimes and early evening: if guys are sitting in their cars, just walk over and someone will usually follow.

View on Google Maps

Baas Hill Common, Broxbourne

Just over the A10 bridge, turn into what looks like a picnic area and follow the dirt road to a dead end by an open field, with a small wood on your right. Members' reports say it's mostly men. One only found walkers in the daytime, so try the evening.

View on Google Maps

Hartham Common, Hertford

Drive towards Bengeo, past Sainsbury's car park and into the Hartham Common car park, right to the end. If that isn't quiet enough, a member's report suggests following the footpath signs towards Ware, where there are some good benches. It's a busy town common by day, so go after dark.

View on Google Maps

Pishiobury Park, Sawbridgeworth

The car park at Pishiobury Park, on the edge of Sawbridgeworth. It was still getting a mention from members in 2025.

Before you go

Plenty of these car parks are shared with walkers and families, so wait until they've gone home, keep it out of sight and leave the place tidy.
