Dogging in Oxfordshire

From Shotover and Wittenham Clumps to White Horse Hill, Aston Rowant and Stoke Wood, the best-known dogging spots in Oxfordshire, with a map for each.

Oxfordshire is all dreaming spires on the postcards, but away from the colleges it is chalk hills, Thames-side car parks and long, quiet A-roads. Even Jeremy Clarkson found out the hard way: in 2024 he bought a pub on the A40 near Burford, only to discover it sat on a famous dogging site. Not wanting to upset the local doggers, and with a nod to its history, he named his new drinking establishment The Farmer's Dog.

The county splits into five areas below, and every spot has its own map. Where a spot is mostly gay, we have said so. Many of these places are popular with walkers and families in the daytime, so each entry notes when things usually get going. Spots change over the years, so treat this as a guide to where to look.

Oxford and around

Country parks and riverside car parks within easy reach of the city, the Thames Path, and a couple of lay-bys and woods on the main roads in and out.

Shotover Country Park

The car park at the top of Shotover Hill, off Old Road in Headington, has been a regular spot for years, mostly couples who like to be watched, late into the night. The Wheatley end by the reservoir gets busy too. A 2024 post says it can get quite busy, and it made the Oxford Mail's round-up of the county's dogging beauty spots in 2019 and again in 2021, which makes it practically a hall-of-famer.

Sandford Lane, Kennington

The gravel car park at the bottom of Sandford Lane, by the Thames. A small group of regulars meets here on Friday and Saturday nights, in the car park and along the Thames Path towards Abingdon, friendly and with touching by invitation only. The Oxford Mail's 2019 dogging round-up gave a nod to its "small group of regulars", which is about as close to a five-star review as a car park gets.

Radley Lakes car park

A small car park for two or three cars at the bottom of the lane, with a trail behind the lakes that's well out of the way. A December 2024 post reports watching a couple here, with everyone leaving smiling.

Godstow car park

A lovely little riverside car park by the Thames at Godstow, near Wolvercote, with some great places to play nearby. Not heavily used, which is part of the appeal.
