Dogging in Somerset

From the Blackdown Hills and the Mendips to Ham Hill and Sand Bay, the county's best-known dogging spots, with a map for each.

Somerset runs from the beaches of Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea to the forest car parks of the Blackdown Hills, the Mendips and the Quantocks, with Bath, Frome and the edge of Exmoor in between. A lot of the best spots here are high up, on hills where you can see headlights coming from a long way off.

All the spots have a map, and the ones you reach on foot carry a what3words address as well. Plenty of them are full of walkers and families in the daytime, so the notes say when they come alive. Places change, so take each one as a starting point.

Taunton and the Blackdown Hills

South of Taunton the Blackdown Hills have forest car parks with long, quiet approach roads, and a hilltop monument above Wellington.

Staple Hill car park, Blackdown Hills

The Forestry car park on Staple Hill: from Taunton head up through Corfe to the crossroads at the top and turn left, and it is signposted as a car park and picnic area. Secluded, with plenty of room to wander, and it gets going from about 9 or 10pm. It replaced the old Priors Park picnic site in Neroche Forest, which the Somerset County Gazette named as a dogging spot as far back as 2003.
