Dogging in Wales

From Jersey Marine and the Gower to the Valleys, the Brecon Beacons, Llanddulas beach and Anglesey, the best-known dogging spots in Wales, with a map for each.

Wales is a land of rugged beauty, from the beaches of Gower and the Brecon Beacons to the mountains of Snowdonia, and it is also home to some of the best dogging spots in the UK. Beaches, forest car parks, mountain-top viewpoints and lakeside picnic areas, with miles of empty countryside in between.

It is a big country, so we have split it into seven areas, from Cardiff and the Valleys up to Anglesey. You get a map for every spot, and a what3words address where you have to walk in. Lots of them are busy with walkers and families in the daytime, so we have said when each one tends to get going. Things change over the years, so think of every spot as a place to start.

Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan

Around the capital the spots are forest car parks on the hills to the north, lakes and country parks on the edge of the city, and quiet coastal car parks out towards Penarth and Barry.

Fforest Fawr car park, Tongwynlais

The forestry car park about half a mile up the road from Castell Coch, the fairytale castle above Tongwynlais. A favourite for years: daytimes are mostly gay men, with couples in cars and in the woods, and the trails head off through the trees in every direction. The castle may look like something out of Disney, but the goings-on in the woods are strictly adults only.

Caerphilly Mountain

Head down the hill from the mountain snack bar towards Caerphilly, and about 500 metres along on the right is a lay-by with a path into the woods, where plenty of walkers are looking for like-minded fun. Either wait in the car for someone to pull in, or take a stroll.

View on Google Maps

Swansea, Gower and Neath Port Talbot

West of Cardiff the spots are mostly by the sea: dunes, beach car parks and the vast car park at Jersey Marine, with a few woodland and waterfall car parks inland.

Jersey Marine

One of the best-known spots in Wales, by the old Jersey Marine tower near the River Neath. Day-trippers have it in the daytime, when the action is out on Crymlyn Burrows, but once they go home the car park fills up with doggers, from dark until 2 or 3 in the morning. Everything on the menu, from couples who like to be watched to big groups: there have been reports of nights where 12 to 16 people gathered around to watch a couple in their car. The tower itself stands tall over it all, like a beacon for doggers all around.

Along the North Wales coast the beach car parks at Llanddulas and Pensarn are the stars, with country parks and mountain car parks inland, Snowdonia's lakes, and Anglesey's beaches and forests.

Llanddulas beach car park

One of the best spots in Wales, with sweeping views of the Irish Sea, no parking fees and public toilets a few metres away. Couples park up in their cars at all hours of the day and night, and the regulars like it so much they keep coming back in the winter, despite the cold. When I'm A Celebrity moved to Gwrych Castle up the hill, the papers pointed out it overlooked the beach, and one insider joked that the castle might be haunted, but the only moans and groans would be coming from the doggers.
