The UK has thousands of dogging sites, but finding a good one can be a challenge. Cash-strapped councils never put up signs, a small but vocal minority of residents oppose them, and most doggers find new spots by word of mouth or by driving from one car park to the next.

So we've picked the UK's five best-known dogging locations, with a review of each covering what to expect by day and by night, and a map for every one. #1 Barrow Wake, Gloucestershire

It will come as no surprise to see Barrow Wake in the top spot. This viewpoint above the A417 near Birdlip has been immensely popular for years with locals and visitors alike, who make the nightly pilgrimage to a dogging site that has gained legendary status. It's so famous that in 2010 someone put up a fake brown tourist sign directing visitors to its “official dogging area”.

By day, Barrow Wake is all about the views: high on the edge of the Cotswolds, with panoramic views across the Severn Vale to the Malverns and, on a clear day, the Welsh mountains. The car park itself is still closed for the A417 roadworks, so for now park on the road nearby and walk in. The action happens in the woods at the bottom end of the car park, where some paths are favoured by groups and others by couples who like to be watched and the voyeurs who love to watch them. Summer, with its long warm evenings, is the best time to go.

At night, Barrow Wake takes on a completely different feel, with far fewer members of the public and more adventurous doggers drawn by the thrill of the unknown under the cover of darkness. There's no lighting and no light pollution, which makes for a great view of the stars but makes some things, like opening a condom, almost impossible, so bring a torch or a head torch. It's high up, so the temperature drops fast after sunset: bring warm clothing even if you don't think you'll need it, and plenty of wet wipes or hand sanitiser, as there are no toilets.

#2 Tog Hill, Bristol

Second on our list is Tog Hill, on the A420 about ten miles east of Bristol. It may be a little less famous than Barrow Wake, but it's on a par for the quality and quantity of the action, and the local paper once put the daily crowd at around a hundred.

By day, Tog Hill has views over Bristol and Bath and the rolling South Gloucestershire countryside, perfect for some alfresco fun. The large car park and picnic area has room for big meet-ups and smaller, more intimate gatherings alike, and walking trails lead off into meadows and woodland. There's often a food van serving hot food and drinks, which has been credited with keeping sessions going for days on end! The toilets were closed in an attempt to put people off, which hasn't worked, and nowadays the fun mostly spills out beyond the car park itself.

At night, Tog Hill becomes a completely different world. Away from the city lights the stars put on quite a show, but there's no lighting, so bring a torch or a head torch. Once night falls the whole site becomes a hive of activity, from those who enjoy being watched to those after the thrill of a stranger through an open car window. Just bring your sense of adventure, and plenty of wet wipes and condoms.

#3 Wisley Common, Surrey

Surrey has long been one of the UK's busiest dogging counties, with over 70 known locations, so picking the best was no easy task. After careful consideration and plenty of research, we've chosen Wisley Common.

By day, the Wren's Nest car park is the gateway to Wisley Common, surrounded by tall trees. It's small and partly untarmacked, so it gets muddy in winter and dusty in summer. Some fun can be had in the car park, but it's mostly a meeting point: the action is out on the common, a vast area of woodland, wetland, walking trails and picnic tables in the shade of the trees. Information boards map out the trails, which helps on a common this big. The picnic benches are particularly popular for gangbangs, while the wooded areas are favoured by those who enjoy bukkake.

At night, the daytime visitors are gone and the common belongs to Surrey's most dedicated doggers. The sounds of nature are punctuated only by the grunts and groans of others, and what goes on is limited only by your imagination. #4 Canvey Heights, Essex

Essex is famous for many things: Gavin and Stacey, TOWIE, the longest pleasure pier in the world, boy racers and the 'Essex girl', a myth that women from Essex are more promiscuous than anywhere else. That's nonsense, of course: everyone in Essex is as horny as hell!

The combination of a love of cars and a sex-mad county has made Essex one of the UK's biggest dogging hotspots, but boy racer meets mean it can be hard to find somewhere the only burning rubber comes from vigorous thrusting. The car park at the end of Smallgains Avenue on Canvey Island, by Canvey Heights Country Park, is the answer: its rough road surface keeps the car enthusiasts away. It's at the end of a public road, so not the most secluded, but it's mostly visited by doggers and dog walkers, who are well used to it and have been known to join in.

By day, it's a handy spot for a lunchtime meet, and with the country park and Smallgains playing fields right next door, you can usually find other doggers at most times of day. The car park is small and open, so it feels safe, but lock your car and keep valuables out of sight. The trails, picnic areas and viewpoints of the country park give plenty of room to explore.

At night, there's no lighting and little passing traffic, so bring a torch and a fully charged phone. It's relaxed and laid-back, and popular with couples who have sex in their cars and roll the windows down to let others watch or join in. #5 Toys Hill, Kent

Kent has some of the UK's best dogging spots, so picking just one was a challenge. After weighing up our own research and local news coverage, we settled on Toys Hill. With a name like that, it was always going to be a contender, and it more than lives up to it.

This National Trust beauty spot, high on the Greensand Ridge near Sevenoaks, has been a favourite of doggers in the know for years, and with more mentions than any other site in the county, it's not much of a secret any more. To find it, take the road from Brasted up towards Ide Hill; the big car park is on the right a little past the pub, some two and a half miles from the turning. It's a large car park surrounded by woodland, with views across the Weald on a clear day.

By day, Toys Hill belongs to walkers, dog walkers and the National Trust crowd, so it's the perfect time for a recce rather than a romp. Stroll the woodland trails, get to know the layout and pick out a few quieter spots, then head to the pub and come back when the sun goes down.

At night, Toys Hill comes alive. The car park is active most nights from around 9pm, and Wednesday nights after 10pm have a following of their own, with couples who like to be watched and are happy to return the favour. It's peaceful, discreet and well away from prying eyes, though the guys tend to outnumber the girls, so ladies and couples can expect a very warm welcome indeed! The woods are pitch black once you're away from the car park and mobile reception can be patchy, so bring a torch, warm clothing and a fully charged phone, and take your litter home.
