Dogging guides
What Is Dogging?
What dogging means, what really goes on, how it has changed and where the word comes from, drawing on 20 years of reports from across the UK.
Dogging means having sex in a public or semi-public place, usually in or around a car, while other people watch or join in. The word is British slang. It mostly happens after dark in quiet car parks, lay-bys, woods and country parks, between consenting adults who have gone there for exactly that reason, and the people who take part are known as doggers.
That's the dictionary version. To give you the real picture, we've drawn on our own research for this guide: around 2,000 location reports posted on public dogging forums between 2006 and 2026, covering 19 English counties and Wales, plus local newspaper coverage, hundreds of Reddit comments from people who've been, and the academic research on the subject.
What dogging actually means
At its heart, dogging is about watching and being watched. The geographer David Bell, in one of the first academic studies of the subject (published in the journal Sexualities in 2006), described it as combining voyeurism, exhibitionism, public sex and partner-swapping or multi-partner sex, mostly in secluded outdoor places. That's a fair summary: some people love an audience, some love to watch, plenty enjoy both, and what makes it dogging rather than just sex in a car is that the audience is welcome.
Why people go dogging
Ask a car park full of doggers why they're there and you'll get a car park full of different answers. There is no single type of person who goes dogging, and no single reason. Some of the most common:
- The exhibitionists. For some, the thrill is being seen. Knowing that strangers are watching, and enjoying it, is the whole point.
- The voyeurs. Others are happiest on the other side of the glass, watching rather than taking part.
- The swingers. Plenty of couples who swing see little difference between meeting new people at a club and meeting them in a quiet car park, except that the car park is free and the dress code is relaxed.
- Couples who share. In some relationships, often called cuckold or hotwife relationships, a partner takes real pleasure in watching the person they love enjoy someone else. Dogging gives them somewhere to do it.
- No strings attached. Men and women alike are drawn by sex that is anonymous and uncomplicated: no dates, no small talk, no expectations afterwards.
- The thrill-seekers. For some it's the edge of doing something so private somewhere so public, under the stars, with a little risk in the air.
- The curious. And some people simply want to know what all the fuss is about, and come along to see for themselves.
Most doggers are a mix of several of these, and many would describe themselves as perfectly ordinary people who happen to enjoy something a little out of the ordinary.
What actually happens: what the reports tell us
Reading through two decades of reports from across the country, a clear picture emerges.
- Night-time, mostly. Mentions of evenings and after dark outnumber daytime ones by around four to one. Weekends come up often, but plenty of spots have their own regular weeknight.
- Couples are the main attraction. Couples are the group mentioned most often, usually a couple putting on a show in their car, with single men watching or invited to join in. Single women turn up far less often in the reports, so women and couples tend to get a very warm welcome.
- It's not only straight. Gay and bi men are the next most mentioned group, and trans and cross-dressing visitors appear regularly too. Some spots are mixed, while others are known as mostly gay and bi.
- Lay-bys mean lorries. At roadside lay-bys, lorry drivers are a big part of the scene, as both watchers and participants.
- Spots come and go. Gates, closing times, cut-back bushes and police patrols come up again and again. In Leicestershire, for example, the Bradgate Park car parks were gated from 2019, and the regulars simply moved up the road.
Some real examples from our county guides: couples who love being watched by lorry drivers in the lay-bys by the M42 at Measham; men wandering the woods behind the Coopers Hill nature reserve car park near Gloucester; and the long-famous Tog Hill picnic area outside Bristol, which the local paper once reported was getting up to a hundred visitors a day. How dogging has changed
The old way was to turn up and see what happened, with car lights as the language: an interior light on as an invitation to watch, flashing headlights to say hello. Those signals still get talked about, but they've largely faded from the reports. Of around 360 forum location posts we read from 2016 onwards, only four mentioned light signals, and none since 2018. The newest posts are mostly people arranging to meet that night, and on Reddit people who've been describe meets as mostly organised through websites.
In other words, dogging has moved online. You still meet in a car park, but these days it's far more likely you've already chatted and agreed a time and a place first.
Where the word "dogging" comes from
Nobody knows for certain, but there are two main theories.
- Spying on couples. The original meaning seems to have been men secretly watching couples having sex in cars, and "dogging" their every move. The word was reportedly in use on Britain's railways as far back as the 1950s, and a Scottish newspaper dated the voyeur meaning to the early 1970s.
- Walking the dog. The other popular explanation is that people told their partners they were taking the dog for a walk, and headed for the local car park instead.
A short history of dogging in Britain
- 1950s to 1990s: a word used in some circles and an underground pastime, passed on by word of mouth.
- 2003: the press discovers it. The BBC and newspapers report on a "new sex craze" organised by text message and over the internet, including a warning about sexual health risks.
- 2004: former footballer Stan Collymore admits to dogging after reporters from The Sun meet him at a car park on Cannock Chase, and the word hits the front pages.
- 2006: academics start taking it seriously, with David Bell's paper in Sexualities.
- 2008 to 2010: police chiefs draw up guidance on "public sex environments", urging officers to avoid knee-jerk reactions, and treating arrest as a last resort.
- 2013: Channel 4's documentary Dogging Tales draws 1.9 million viewers and two nominations at the Grierson documentary awards.
- 2018 onwards: local papers publish lists of their area's best-known spots, and some landowners respond with gates and closing times.
- 2020: during lockdown, residents near Barrow Wake in Gloucestershire told BBC Radio Gloucestershire it had actually got busier.
- Today: most meets are arranged online first, but the best-known spots are as popular as ever.
Myths and reality
- "Dogging is illegal." There's no law against dogging as such in the UK. Trouble starts when people who haven't come to watch could see you. Our guide Is dogging legal in the UK? explains the detail.
- "Anyone parked up at night is up for it." They're not. Car parks are shared spaces, and plenty of people are just eating their chips or having a nap.
- "It's all about secret light signals." Not any more: the signals are mostly history, and most people arrange things online first.
- "It's only straight couples." Far from it. Couples, single men and women, gay and bi men and trans people all go dogging.
- "It's a free-for-all." It isn't. Consent rules everything: you join in when you're invited, and "no" means no. See our guide to dogging etiquette.
A few dogging terms
- Dogger: someone who goes dogging.
- Spot or site: a place where dogging regularly happens.
- Watcher: someone who comes along to watch rather than join in.
- Meet: a get-together arranged in advance, usually online.
- Wife dogging: a couple where she takes centre stage and other people get involved, with her partner looking on or taking part.
- Cruising: the long-established term for men meeting other men for sex in public places.
